By Beth Ann Crozier-Dodson, Ph.D.
Recent statistics show that the levels of world hunger, malnutrition and food- and waterborne disease are among the most critical global
public health issues facing the international community. A 2009
report on international food security by the Food
and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of
the United Nations estimated that 1.02
billion people are victims of hunger, up
from 963 million in 2008. That’s
one-sixth of humanity, according to
the FAO—an all-time high in
recorded world hunger statistics.
