Books to Sink Your Teeth Into
While perusing the exhibits at the recent International Asso- ciation for Food Protection meeting in Milwaukee, I hap-
pened upon the Food Safety News booth and picked up a free copy
of the book Poisoned by Jeff Benedict. While certainly familiar with
the general story of Jack in the Box’s E. coli O157:H7 crisis, I could
not help but devour the unfolding details of the
families’ stories, heart-wrenching as they were. We
all know this event could have happened to any of
the fast-food burger restaurants, and we know that
the regulations at that time fell short of food pro-
tection. But we also know that the outcome was a
strengthening of meat handling and processing best
practices (thanks, Dave!) as well as the remarkable transparency on
the part of Jack in the Box to share what they learned, in effect,
leading to overall improvements in foodservice food safety.
